We are looking for an ambitious and highly capable Associate Structural Engineer to join our exciting and fast-paced design team at Bryden Wood, an award winning multi-disciplinary design company with an ambition to advance the built environment, through design innovation and construction methodology.

As an Associate, you will focus on successful project delivery being able to manage the design of a broad range of building structures projects. You will be comfortable working on challenging projects simultaneously, with experience in all commonly used structural materials, and providing commercially aware design solutions.

Associates will have proven experience in building design and the ability to manage and resource teams and work closely with other disciplines for the delivery of projects.

Responsibilities will include the preparation of fee proposals and working closely with Directors on complex bids to understand the scope of services for delivery.

Clear communication skills at both technical and non-technical levels to appropriate audiences is key to this role.

An Associate will monitor quality assurance, costs and project milestones, and lead projects from conception through to completion. They will be responsible for the resourcing of a project, monitoring the resources and spend throughout the project. You will lead senior and less experienced engineers and manage resources for project delivery.

Required Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of CDM Regulations
  • Ability to identify, develop and present engineering solutions
  • Ability to lead projects, manage workloads and teams
  • Ability to produce fee proposals, monitor project progress, and spend
  • Ability to liaise with clients directly 
  • Have strong communication and personal effectiveness skills
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships at all levels internally and externally
  • Proven experience of communicating with client and project teams
  • Proven ability to prepare clear and concise technical reports and presentations 
  • Ability to communicate complex technical issues to a non-technical audience
  • Manage project teams and reporting from Senior Engineers/Engineers
  • Inform, communicate, and promote the standards created and required within the internal Quality Management Systems
  • Actively contribute to development of structural team through identification of further opportunities
  • A thorough knowledge of the BIM process.
  • Knowledge of BIM and Revit programming is beneficial but not necessary.
  • Excellent knowledge of UK design codes and standards including Eurocodes, British Standards and Building Regulations
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word and Excel)

Associates will demonstrate the following attributes:

  • Be responsible for reviewing / QA check other projects within the office and ensure their own projects have been reviewed / QA checked

  • Give direction and offer advice to members of the Structures group
  • Manage the work of Senior Engineers and Engineers and contribute to the overall running of business as defined by the company Directors
  • Work on high level management of multiple projects
  • Explore new business relationships
  • Lead bid teams for future opportunities
  • Have good commercial and client liaison skills, whilst retaining technical knowledge and ability
  • Review and contribute to the weekly resourcing for the structures group
  • Conduct interviews and appraisals for Bryden Wood Engineers and Senior Engineers
  • Have knowledge of and comply with Bryden Wood Quality Management system, procedures and standards
  • Have good interpersonal skills and the ability to work well within and lead a team
  • Be able to use a variety of media in the development and documentation of a design project
  • Take initiative in response to direction or instruction
  • Be able to work well under pressure, and meet deadlines efficiently
  • Attend site and represent the practice at meetings with members of the design team and client 
  • Recognise potential opportunities for development
  • Able to lead engagements with stakeholders including local councils, Building Control etc.
  • Enthusiastic about innovating within the construction industry to improve sustainability, health and safety, and productivity
  • Highly effective and efficient problem-solver who takes an organised and systematic approach to solving design problems
  • Genuine enthusiasm for engineering design and modelling
  • Willing to work within a challenging design environment
  • Able to work collaboratively in a team environment or independently with self-managed projects
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work well with a wide range of professionals, at any level internal and external to the company
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills in English

Experience & Education

  • Have a relevant Civil Engineering or Structural Engineer degree from a recognised institution (Master's preferred but not essential)
  • Have chartered with IStructE or ICR or equivalent; or progressing towards chartership.
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a design office in the construction industry with exposure to a variety of project sizes, stages and industries, in a lead position.
