Northbury Primary School is housed in an imposing early 20th century four storey school building.

The existing building was in need of modernisation to make it fit for 21st Century education needs. The project to upgrade the school included the provision of a striking new three storey teaching block providing a new school entrance and reception areas, additional classrooms on the upper floors and a kitchen and servery at ground floor.

The new teaching block was built using a glulam timber structure and features a stack driven mixed mode ventilation system. The school is situated with LB of B&D’s action energy zone and was constructed to meet the client’s stringent sustainability and energy efficiency targets set as follows:

  • Integration of solar panels to provide domestic hot water
  • Photovoltaic panels
  • Biomass boilers
  • 10% on site renewable energy systems
  • Rainwater recycling
  • BREEAM Excellent Rating
