Replacing an existing bridge, the new link bridge spans 50m between the multi-storey car park and the arrivals area, forming a highly visible landmark in the Heathrow complex.
The design of the bridge faced particular difficulties: its purpose is to connect two points that are offset and on different levels, and it spans 50m over a road that could not be closed for construction and also needed to take account of the requirement for future bridge connections at the ends.
To complicate matters further it was also designed to withstand possible impact loads from cargo vehicles and bomb blasts. The solution was a corridor made from 6m long, 5m wide prefabricated modules, suspended from a sloping arch.
