REM is a groundbreaking design automation platform for use in the Smart Motorways Programme (SMP) enabling schemes to be designed in a faster and smarter way.
By taking a positive approach to disruption we can achieve exceptional results, reducing concept design time from nine months to just five days, with the ultimate goal of designing a smart motorway in a day.
REM, developed by Bryden Wood with Highways England and their supply chain, adopts a radical new approach through automated design that provides agnostic, data-driven design and evidence-based decision making.
The information generated through the REM process represents a single source of truth for SMP schemes. This combines decisions made through the automation process - analysis, evaluation and layout – as well as decisions made through human engineering know-how.
Through the REM platform, we create a ‘data repository’ of all schemes (in terms of design and data) which can be connected to other SMP (and HE) systems, providing a scalable digital ecosystem that can provide benefit to many stakeholders across the project lifecycle.
REM is innovative in terms of digital technologies, but also in terms of people. REM supports increased and intense collaboration between diverse people from different disciplinary backgrounds thereby bringing new perspectives to problems and solutions.
The adoption of REM brings the advent of a wider digital transformation that also facilitates a cultural change through increased collaboration. Everyone can easily explore environmental risks alongside design standard compliance all in the same virtual space. This provides greater process transparency, drives efficiencies and supports an open, evidence-based approach.
REM delivers product-based design in an intelligent, efficient and robust way through a level of automation unprecedented in this sector.
REM is currently in its third development iteration and delivers the following functionality:
REM has followed a ‘4Ds’ approach of Discover, Develop, Demonstrate, and Deliver and has tracked functionality and feature development against product maturity levels. At each step, key stakeholders from SMP and the wider supply chain have been involved in reviews to validate the REM capabilities.
