Met Police Programme | Bryden Wood

Fifteen years of designing secure, efficient facilities for the Metropolitan Police Service – from front-line patrol bases and community policing spaces to a custody facility built with prefabricated timber cassettes, and a driving academy that trains officers from across the UK and the world.

Bryden Wood has partnered with the Metropolitan Police Service for over 15 years, delivering a portfolio of facilities across London that spans every type of policing environment. Each project is designed to meet the operational, security, and sustainability requirements of one of the UK's most critical public services – from the welfare of front-line officers to the long-term resilience of the facilities they work in.

Project details:

  • Bryden Wood's MPS portfolio spans patrol bases at Heathrow Airport and Dagenham, community policing spaces delivered through the Safer Neighbourhoods Programme, the Wandsworth Police Station and Custody Facility – which consolidated fragmented facilities into a single hub using prefabricated timber cassettes and recycled demolition material – and the Hendon Driving Academy, a specialist training facility for advanced police driver training that serves officers from across the UK and internationally.

The Wandsworth Police Station and Custody Facility is among the most distinctive projects in the portfolio – consolidating previously fragmented facilities into a single, high-performing hub. The design incorporated prefabricated timber cassettes and recycled demolition material to minimise environmental impact while meeting strict custody standards. It demonstrates that sustainability and security are not competing priorities in public sector design.

The Hendon Driving Academy replaces an existing facility demolished as part of the Colindale Gardens redevelopment in north London. The new building supports the MPS's ambition to maintain its position as an international centre of excellence for police driver training – with classrooms, testing areas, a Driving Standards Agency testing room, an administration suite, and briefing and breakout spaces, designed for a challenging site and tight programme. The MPS's key message for the academy is straightforward: 'Safety without compromise.'

The Metropolitan Police Service needs facilities that work under pressure, every day, without fail. Fifteen years of partnership with Bryden Wood has produced a portfolio that demonstrates how design excellence, operational intelligence, and sustainability can be delivered together – across every type of policing environment.
