This is a newly updated edition of our original book on platforms.

The first edition of this book was written by Jaimie Johnston MBE in 2017 to define and inform the thinking around the development of a platforms design (P-DfMA) approach to construction. It focuses on the opportunity, and benefits, of applying the platform design approach to the scale and scope of the UK Government's construction portfolio. 

It was a precursor to the reviews and policies that followed, including;

  • Transforming Infrastructure Performance, from the Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA) in 2017
  • Off-site manufacture for construction: Building for change, a report from the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee
  • The formation of the Construction Innovation Hub in 2018 and its Defining the Need report, published in 2020
  • Transforming Performance and Productivity in the Construction Industry, from the Maufacturing Technology Centre in 2019
  • the UK Government's The Construction Playbook: Government guidance on sourcing and contracting public works projects and programmes, in 2020
  • the IPA's Transforming Infrastructure Performance: Roadmap to 2030, published in 2021

Also on this page are our three previous books on platform design for manufacture and assembly (P-DfMA), explaining the use of a platform design approach to construction. These platform design books have grown in influence and importance since publication. It is our hope that these books will help further facilitate the adoption and wide-reaching benefits of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC).

Data Driven Infrastructure: From digital tools to manufactured components (2017)

Delivery Platforms for Government Assets is primarily focused on buildings rather than infrastructure. Without duplicating the content from the earlier book, this horizontal assets book highlighted some current, relevant initiatives that were being deployed for clients - including Highways England and Crossrail - that could be replicated as a standardised, P-DfMA approach across a range of horizontal infrastructure projects in the highways, rail and water sectors.

Platforms: Bridging the gap between construction and manufacturing (2018)

The purpose of this book is to build on Delivery Platforms for Government Assets and Data Driven Infrastructure, by setting out how a manufacture-led approach to construction would support the commitments made by Government. In particular, it sets out how a platform design approach, common in the manufacturing and software industries, could be adopted by the construction sector - and the benefits P-DfMA could unlock.
